BJ Gibson is the latest transfer portal player to land in Columbia, SC. Just as defensive back Karon Prunty decides he needs to move closer to home, South Carolina picks up commitment from another transfer DB. This time the transfer comes to South Carolina from Navy. BJ Gibson saw substantial playing time for Navy and will join the Gamecocks roster as a preferred walk on. This means that he will not be on scholarship.
While BJ Gibson remains an unproven addition to our secondary he will add much needed depth at the position. During his time at Navy Gibson played in four games. Here is some more information about South Carolina’s most recent transfer portal pickup.
Where is BJ Gibson from?
BJ Gibson played his high school football in Marietta, Georgia at Walton High School. He originally committed to Navy where he saw action in four different games during the 2020 college football season.
What Position does BJ Gibson Play?
During his time at Navy, BJ Gibson primarily played defensive back. After transferring to South Carolina we expect he will continue to play that position. We need athletes in the secondary and BJ Gibson will give us extra depth at one of our defense’s thinnest positions. It is possible that BJ Gibson could get some snaps as a wide receiver or kick return specialist at some point in his career. Only time will tell what role BJ Gibson plays for the Gamecocks.
Will BJ Gibson Start at South Carolina?
Some fans are curious how big of an impact Navy transfer BJ Gibson will have on the defense. While he will add valuable depth to our defensive backfield, he will likely not get the start over some other, more established, players such as Cam Smith, RJ Roderick, or Jaylen Dickerson. As he matures and gets more experience in the defense he may have an opportunity to start later in his career.
